PayPal will integrate its payments network and global merchant base directly into ChatGPT, allowing users to make purchases from within the chat interface.

The company announced it is adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) to connect its network of “tens of millions” of merchants to OpenAI. The move will make products from small businesses and major brands discoverable and purchasable inside ChatGPT, effectively turning the AI assistant into a new commerce platform.

The partnership enables OpenAI’s Instant Checkout feature, allowing ChatGPT’s “hundreds of millions” of weekly users to pay with their PayPal wallet. PayPal will also manage payment processing for merchants, including card payments, via a delegated payments API.

“Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop,” said Alex Chriss, President and CEO of PayPal. “By partnering with OpenAI and adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal will power payments and commerce experiences that help people go from chat to checkout in just a few taps for our joint customer bases.”

Multiple funding options

Users checking out with PayPal will have access to multiple funding options, including bank, balance, and cards, as well as buyer and seller protections, tracking, and dispute resolution services.

The integration of merchant product catalogues is scheduled to launch in 2026. PayPal will use its own ACP server to act as a scalable and compliant access layer, managing all merchant routing and payment validation. This system removes the need for individual merchants to build their own integrations.

Beyond the commerce partnership, PayPal is expanding its own internal AI strategy by scaling access to ChatGPT Enterprise for its 24,000+ employees and using Codex and OpenAI’s APIs to “accelerate product development” and “boost employee impact”.
