Code.org has announced a worldwide artificial intelligence education initiative designed to reach millions of K-12 students during Computer Science Education Week from December 8-12, 2025, marking the next evolution of its Hour of Code movement that has already engaged more than 15 per cent of students globally.
The Hour of AI initiative, developed in collaboration with CSforALL and backed by Microsoft, Amazon, Anthropic, Zoom, LEGO Education and dozens of other leading organisations, aims to demystify artificial intelligence through hands-on activities combining coding with AI tools for music and dance creation.
“Just as the Hour of Code showed students they could be creators of technology, the Hour of AI will help them imagine their place in an AI-powered world,” said Hadi Partovi, CEO and co-founder of Code.org. “Every student deserves to feel confident in their understanding of the technology shaping their future. And every parent deserves the confidence that their child is prepared for it.”
The programme addresses growing concerns about AI preparedness in education as artificial intelligence rapidly transforms work and learning environments. Students will design dancers, remix music and choreograph original routines using blended coding and AI technologies, with partners creating dozens of subject-specific activities for both students and adults.
New partner National Parents Union emphasises the initiative’s significance beyond classroom settings. “Parents are the first and most important teachers our kids have, and right now, we’re being asked to guide them through the most powerful technological shift of our lifetimes,” said Keri Rodrigues, CEO of the National Parents Union.
The launch represents Code.org’s strategic expansion from computer science education into AI literacy, reflecting broader industry recognition that artificial intelligence understanding has become essential for future workforce preparation. The programme requires no prior experience and encourages participation from teachers, parents, students and education advocates.
Code.org’s original Hour of Code movement demonstrated significant reach across educational systems, working with all 50 US states and over 70 countries to create sustainable computer science policies. The organisation positions the Hour of AI as continuing this mission whilst addressing contemporary technological challenges.
Registration opens immediately at HourofAI.org for year-round participation, with formal activities concentrated during December’s Computer Science Education Week.
