Google has unveiled major artificial intelligence features for its Chrome browser, transforming the platform from a passive web viewer into an intelligent assistant that understands user context and tasks.
The company announced three primary AI capabilities rolling out to users: an AI browsing assistant called Gemini in Chrome, enhanced search functionality through AI Mode in the address bar, and expanded safety protections powered by machine learning.
Chrome Vice President Parisa Tabriz explained that the changes represent more than simple feature additions, fundamentally altering how users interact with web content by shifting from passive consumption to proactive, intelligent assistance.
The Gemini assistant can analyse content across multiple browser tabs simultaneously, answer questions about articles, locate references within YouTube videos, and integrate with Google services including Docs and Calendar. Future development will include autonomous task completion, such as grocery ordering, reducing complex processes to simple user interactions.
Chrome’s address bar, termed the omnibox by Google, gains AI Mode functionality enabling users to pose complex, multi-part questions directly from the search interface. The system will provide contextual suggestions based on current page content, such as warranty information prompts when browsing mattress retailers.
Safety enhancements utilise AI for credential autofill, scam detection, security issue resolution, and privacy decision assistance. The technology has demonstrated measurable impact, with Android Chrome users now receiving “3 billion fewer scammy and spammy website notifications a day.”
Initial availability targets Mac and Windows users in the United States with English language settings. Mobile versions for Android and iOS will follow, whilst AI Mode functionality launches later this month before expanding to additional countries and languages.
The features represent Google’s broader strategy to integrate AI capabilities across its services, positioning Chrome as an intelligent web companion rather than a traditional browsing tool.
Chrome originally launched in 2008 with focuses on speed, security, stability and openness, helping establish modern web standards and innovation patterns.
