Pinterest has introduced new controls allowing users to adjust the amount of generative AI content appearing in their feeds, responding to demands for greater balance between human and AI-generated material.
The platform’s updated tuner enables users to reduce AI-generated imagery on eligible image Pins in categories including beauty, art, fashion and home decor. The feature is available on Android and desktop systems, with gradual rollout across iOS planned over the coming weeks.
“With our new GenAI controls, we’re empowering people to personalize their Pinterest experience more than ever—striking the right balance between human creativity and AI innovation, and ensuring every feed truly reflects what inspires them most,” says Matt Madrigal, chief technology officer.
Generative AI content now comprises 57 per cent of all online material, according to Pinterest. The company selected initial categories based on their susceptibility to AI modification or generation, with plans to expand category coverage based on user feedback.
Users can manage preferences through Settings by accessing “refine your recommendations” and selecting categories where they wish to see less AI-generated imagery. The controls can also be accessed through the three-dot overflow menu on individual Pins, with adjustments permitted at any time.
The feature builds on generative AI labels introduced earlier this year, which display indicators on image Pins detected as potentially generated or modified using AI. Pinterest stated the labels will become more prominent over coming weeks as detection tools improve.
The company emphasised its commitment to iterating on generative AI features whilst maintaining user control and transparency over content types appearing in feeds.
